Meet our new ILQHYA member Derek Smith. This lively young man is nine years old and began his riding career at the ripe age of 4 and started racing 2 years ago! Derek lives in Pontiac with his mom, dad, and 3 show horses and 2 additional horses that are pets. Derek runs barrels with his gelding “gold digger”. His mare “Diva” runs poles and barrels. Recently, his family purchased a new quarter horse, and his name is “Hot Rod”, and he is excited to begin racing him too. His horses enjoy carrots for treats, however Derek enjoys apple pie! Derek’s goal for the summer is to attempt to not knock anything down, as well as attend the AQHYA youth world show. Derek is passionate about and in running and last year he was awarded most promising racer at the Four Rocks Arena in Delavan, IL! In addition to Derek’s need for speed he also enjoys baseball and basketball. We are so excited to have Derek on our team this year and can not wait to cheer for him at the AQHYA world show!
